What’s a favorite memory from the early part of your career (particularly with the age groups you currently teach)?
One of my earliest memories is from when I was around 8 years old, just starting ballet lessons. I wasn’t particularly skilled and often felt left out because I struggled with the combinations and remembering the vocabulary, unlike my peers. I was eventually placed in a lower class with younger dancers, and I remember feeling deeply ashamed, convinced that quitting was the best option. Financially, I knew the strain lessons placed on my mom, so I thought I could persuade her to let me stop. But her response was unexpected: she told me I could quit—once I got good at it. Her persistence kept me going, and eventually, I improved. By the time I felt confident, quitting was the last thing on my mind.
Can you share a small story about what inspired you to pursue dance?
I’ve never considered myself naturally talented at much—dance included. Growing up, validation didn’t come easily in my family. I craved recognition and praise, believing it only came from being the best at something. Dance felt like the most attainable goal, especially since it was one of the few things I was already doing. So, I chose dance not because I was good at it, but because I believed I could become good at it.
Who has been a significant figure in your dance journey (mentor, teacher, etc.)?
In 2014, I competed at Hip-Hop International in Las Vegas, but my team finished last in our division. Ironically, that loss led me to something great. I was captivated by the first-place team from the U.S., only to discover they were based near me in California. Determined to learn from them, I joined their team and later asked their director to mentor me. His mentorship profoundly shaped my approach to choreography and the way I pursue dance, continuing to guide my decisions as a director to this day. His philosophy still resonates in every piece I create.
What advice would you give to young dancers or to yourself when you first started?
If I were to give advice to my younger self, it would be this: as you strive to be the best, be at peace with being a lifelong learner. Learning never stops. Embrace it, and always work toward becoming who you aspire to be. Face your daily challenges with determination. Persevere, push through, and find joy in the journey.
What’s been the biggest challenge you've faced in your dance career, and how did you overcome it?
Recently, I faced a challenge as a teacher, feeling that my time and creativity should solely be dedicated to my students. The idea of taking classes as a student or choreographing for myself felt selfish, and honestly, it was intimidating. I feared stepping into a class and not being the best, especially since I teach these same styles. But after reflecting, I realized how important it is to continue growing for myself, not just for my students. I reconnected with a dance community and found peace in knowing that growth halts when ego takes over. I’ve learned to prioritize my own development, giving myself the space to learn and evolve, regardless of where I stand.
