MEET THE STAFF

KAI CAMERON

Kai started dance at the age of 13 in the city of Artesia where he trained at Quest Dance Studio, where he was able to train with some past America’s Best Dance Crew teachers – Quest Crew and Poreotics. Through weekly classes and intense training with some of the best minds in the dance world, he entered the dance community where he gained more training under Q Minor, the G-Fam, and well-respected names in the freestyle scene. He then began his choreography journey with joining Miniotics Dance Crew in 2015, appearing on America’s Got Talent NBC and the World of Dance Tour stops. In 2021, he started his own dance company, Hyphen Collective, where he focuses on instilling confidence in the next generation of dancers.

What’s a favorite memory from the early part of your career (particularly with the age groups you currently teach)?

I started dance at 13. My favorite memories at that time was spending extra time with my dance teammates before and after classes. The social and community aspect of dance has always been my favorite, and it’s shaped my teaching style. As an instructor, I have an emphasis on growing as a unit and team rather than an individual – that collective mindset has always been the best path to success for me.

Can you share a small story about what inspired you to pursue dance?

Before I started dance, I was heavily involved with sports and music. Dance is the only art that can combine both athleticism, music, and art at the same time, so through dance, I am able to participate in everything I love all at once.

Who has been a significant figure in your dance journey (mentor, teacher, etc.)?

My close friends and team have been the most significant figures in my life in general. My circle of dance friends helped me bring out the best in my personality, and through that, I’ve been able to produce the best dance possible.

What advice would you give to young dancers or to yourself when you first started?

Some advice I’d give young dancers is to dance every day because you love doing it, not because you’re just being told to. Dance is much more fun when doing it for the love of it.

What’s been the biggest challenge you've faced in your dance career, and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge I’ve faced in my dance career is reaching the final round at the International Hip Hop Championships. That was a goal of mine that took 10 years to achieve, and I did it through much studying, creative work, and relying on my dancers and friends to help carry the workload. Fully trusting and embracing the crew that I had was the key to achieving my dreams and overcoming the biggest obstacle in my life.
