SOPHIA GALLARDO

Sophia, a Southern California native, has been passionate about dance since she was three years old. In high school, she was a proud member of the Mater Dei Varsity song leading team. Following graduation, she joined the US Spiritleaders as part of their dance staff. Sophia earned her BA in Dance with a minor in Entrepreneurship from Cal State University, Long Beach, where she also danced on the university's Dance Team for two years.

Throughout her career, Sophia has assisted notable choreographers like Andy Vaca and Mina Ortega and has danced professionally for brands like Vans and artists such as Mario Aguilar. She was also part of the Vixens, directed by David Slaney.

With over eight years of experience in teaching, choreographing, and coaching in Orange County and Long Beach, Sophia is dedicated to fostering a love for dance in her students. At Charade, she focuses on helping her students grow into confident, creative individuals while maintaining a safe, fun, and structured environment in her classes.

What’s a favorite memory from the early part of your career (particularly with the age groups you currently teach)?

My favorite memory was getting to perform in front of an audience. Whether it was a competition or a community event I always loved the feeling of getting to share my passion with those watching. There was something about getting off stage and feeling all of the adrenaline.

Can you share a small story about what inspired you to pursue dance?

My mom was a dancer so by default I started dancing at 3 yrs old. I really started to fall in love with it in fourth grade and loved Jazz and Hip hop. 5th grade I started taking all styles and in 6th grade I started competing.

Who has been a significant figure in your dance journey (mentor, teacher, etc.)?

My professors at Cal State Long Beach.

What advice would you give to young dancers or to yourself when you first started?

To dance because you love it. To never lose the fun feeling. Work hard and stay encouraged even when it gets tough.

What’s been the biggest challenge you've faced in your dance career, and how did you overcome it?

Staying creative and true to my authentic self and movement quality.
